Chuck Davis Emerging Choreographer Fellowship Showing
Tamara Thomas, recipient of the 2017 Chuck Davis Emerging Choreographer Fellowship, presents an evening of choreography that emanates from her study in Ghana. This annual fellowship—in honor of DanceAfrica founding elder Baba Chuck Davis—awards emerging choreographers an opportunity to travel to Africa and study with one or more experts in African dance.
Thomas returns to share a movement technique called denkyem, which she began developing during her trip in Ghana. The evening begins with a video introduction to denkyem, followed by a performance of Thomas’ choreographic works: …still…, Fugitive Body, and Defying Death/you will NOT steal my joy.
