Joey De Jesus: HOAX | Opening Reception
Join BRIC for the opening reception of an exhibition transforming BRIC’s Project Room with swirling patterns of words in a performative, installation-based format to question intentions of power and sources of oppression.
In this exhibition, visual artist Joey De Jesus explores intersections of poetry, interactive technology, and mysticism. Transforming BRIC’s Project Room with swirling patterns of words, HOAX utilizes the structure of poetry in a performative, installation-based format to question intentions of power and sources of oppression. Their poems expressly focus on the animating act of reading a text, building off of that to then create animated text that “reads you.” In HOAX, De Jesus applies aesthetic tenets of found, concrete, and sound poetics to create astrolabes, calendars, incantations, free-verse, lyric, and erasure poems. This installation is a living body of cosmological, mystic poetry, in which the artist creates an environment out of words, literally bringing thought into form as living text.
