Look + Listen Festival
The Look + Listen Festival celebrates contemporary classical music by presenting it in compelling visual art settings. Each concert offers a chance to hear a diverse group of performers and playing pieces by some of today’s finest composers.
The performance at BRIC House takes place in the context of BRIC’s Bordering the Imaginaryexhibition, and features the New York City premiere of the 2018 Look + Listen commissioned work, Talking Gong by Susie Ibarra. This chamber work references the four pan gongs called, Gandingan, played in Philippine gong-chime music from Mindanao, Philippines. These gongs and some of their musical patterns were used to communicate from one village to another. This new work plays with these interlocking cyclical rhythms for piano, percussion and flute. It also draws upon the influence of the overtones of the gongs.
The program will also include Claire Chase (MacArthur Genius Grant) performing Empty Garlicby 2016 Pulitzer-Prize composer Du Yun for bass flute and electronics. The work is part of her Density project, which Chase started 22-years ago to commission an entirely new body of repertoire for flute.
