General store offers country charm
June 4, 2013
An air of nostalgia may be the first thing you notice when walking into Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store. A vintage-looking sign hangs above the door and welcomes you into the shop, lined with long windows and inspirational quotes painted on the bright green walls.
Since first opening in October of 2007, owner Ann Cantrell has been bringing a classic twist to modern shopping at the location on the corner of Bond and State Streets.
“I always loved going to country general stores in New England, Vermont, Massachusetts, and I loved the idea of that kind of edited yet unedited feeling of going in and thinking, ‘I didn’t even know I needed x, y, and z,’” Ann said of her inspiration for the store. “I wanted to bring that same idea to city living.”
And with products for the home, children, pets, and gifts for any occasion, Annie’s really does live up to its title of “General Store.” Cantrell and her staff personally pick out all of the products in the shop from artisans all around the world, and from many right here in Brooklyn. They aim to stock items that are high in quality, not necessarily quantity.
“Instead of ten choices of something we’re giving you the best that life has to offer all under one roof. That’s what the ‘Blue Ribbon’ means.”
If you can’t make it out to the shop, Annie’s also has an online store that offers almost everything that is available at the brick and mortar location. Ann and her staff also run a blog, Annie’s Treasure Trove, which provides gift inspirations and smart ways to use their products.
Annie’s is open 11am to 7pm Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6pm on Sundays.
