Outdoor dining coming to Willoughby Plaza
July 2, 2014
Summer is the season of rooftop bars, movie screenings in the park, and starting next week, outdoor dining at Downtown Brooklyn’s Hill Country Barbecue Market. July 10 is the grand opening date for the Texan-style barbecue joint to offer seating on Willoughby Plaza, as well as a new menu that’s exclusive to al fresco diners.
Hill Country Executive Chef Elizabeth Karmel’s special outdoor offerings will include The Butcher’s Pick, your choice of a serving of market chicken, pork spare ribs, or lean brisket, plus cornbread and any side; the Chopped Brisket Sandwich, stuffed with ‘If You Gotta Have It’ barbecue sauce; Smoked Brisket Tacos topped with pickled onions, Cotija cheese, and chipotle mayo; and Chili Nachos with Texas queso and red chili.
Of course, outdoor diners will also get their pick of Hill Country’s mouthwatering selection of sides like Longhorn cheddar mac & cheese, collard greens with smoked bacon, and sweet potato bourbon mash, plus desserts such as Cowboy Brownies and the Mason Blackout Cake.
Outdoor tables will be available from Monday through Sunday, noon to 10pm (weather permitting) with a first-come, first-served seating policy.
The 14,000-square-foot Willoughby Plaza was reopened in January 2013 as part of the New York City Department of Transportation’s Plaza Program to build neighborhood open spaces. Renovations included new planted areas, sidewalk extensions, and public seating. The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership oversees maintenance of the public plaza, as well as community programming and events in the space.
“As the residential population in Downtown Brooklyn continues to surge and add numbers to the hundreds of thousands of workers, tourists, and students here every day, we need to meet the growing demand for more restaurants in the neighborhood,” said Downtown Brooklyn Partnership President Tucker Reed. “That is why we are thrilled to partner with Hill Country Barbecue Market to not only bring online a great outdoor dining option, but also another live music venue – all of which helps to make Downtown a true 24/7 destination.”
Speaking of live music, those familiar with Hill Country won’t be surprised to hear that the grand opening festivities on Thursday, July 10 will include a set by the bluegrass group The Ebony Hillbillies, who’ll perform outdoors from 5:30 to 7:30pm. After filling up on beer and brisket, head inside to hear the Austin-based band Wood & Wire on Hill Country’s second-floor stage at 8:30pm.
