The key is to inform yourself about the buildings, the application process, and whether you qualify for current affordable housing opportunities.
Step 1: NYC Housing Connect
The City manages all its affordable housing lotteries through a single web portal called NYC Housing Connect.
Create an account at this website to be able to view current affordable housing lotteries throughout the five boroughs and to be notified of all upcoming opportunities. Information includes income and housing sizes requirements and application deadlines.
Tip: You must apply for each lottery separately, and only apply once to each lottery or you will be disqualified.
Step 2: Income qualifications
Knowing whether you qualify for affordable housing is something that varies with each development. When searching on the NYC Housing Connect website, each building profile includes the income qualifications for the specific building, breaking it down by income and the number of members per household.
Choose the building you wish to apply for, and open the PDF to see the building profile, including the number of affordable units available per income bracket and household size, as well as the monthly rent for each number of bedrooms.
Tip: Have more questions? NYC Housing Connect’s FAQ page is very comprehensive and provides clarity on a range of issues.
Step 3: Get assistance
It is no secret that the process of applying for affordable housing is a lengthy and complicated. Fortunately, there are several nonprofit organizations focused on providing additional to guide applicants through the entire process.
