Brooklyn Tech Triangle Selected for City’s Amazon HQ2 Proposal
Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard comprise only Brooklyn selection.
October 24, 2017
Since Amazon announced its search for a second headquarters in September – Amazon HQ2 – we’ve all heard and read about the nationwide mobilization of cities, states and businesses to develop alluring proposals and incentive packages.
In response to the City’s RFEI, released with the purpose of identifying NYC’s best locations, the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership worked with local business leaders and its Board members to champion the neighborhood’s superior assets. Of the more than two dozen proposals received by the City, the Brooklyn Tech Triangle was selected as one of its four Amazon HQ2 proposals – the only proposal chosen from Brooklyn.
With this selection, the City recognized the strength of a proposal that capitalizes on the synergy and combined strengths of Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. All just minutes apart, yet each so distinctive, these three locations comprise a truly mixed use neighborhood, with an urban campus feel that companies like Amazon are looking for – as attested to by the area’s record low vacancy rate.
With 10 strong higher education institutions and 60,000 students, and a current residential population of 22,000 that is expected to more than double by 2025, Amazon would have direct access to a highly-qualified talent pipeline. Served by 13 subway lines and 15 bus lines, the Long Island Railroad, and the expanding NYC Ferry system, our transit system rivals any downtown in the country:
The Tech Triangle is accessible from great neighborhoods where workers want to live. Classic brownstone neighborhoods are a stone’s throw away, and desirable residential areas such as Sunset Park and Bay Ridge are within easy reach via subway.
Beyond all this, the area offers a great quality of life. We have a renowned food scene and over 70 cultural institutions, including BAM, BRIC, and St. Ann’s Warehouse. And don’t forget Barclays Center, which is one of the country’s top venues. We have incredible open spaces. Brooklyn Bridge Park - the gateway to Brooklyn and the most significant new park in the nation - is right at the doorstep of the Tech Triangle.
In coordination with our partners in DUMBO and the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and the City and State, we look forward to next steps in the selection process. Regardless of the outcome, the inclusion of the Brooklyn Tech Triangle in NYC’s proposal is further recognition of its status as a world-class destination and an exceptional location to do business in.
