Slough Off 2017 + Rejuvenate in 2018
Everything you need to tackle those resolutions is right here in Downtown BK
A New Year is so terribly exciting. New resolutions, new you, new everything. And then – the January blahs strike. But it’s only February, so don’t throw in that towel! Or, before you do, at least take advantage of all the great resources in the area for working out, eating well, and looking your very best.
For keeping fit, you’re in luck. Downtown Brooklyn has an impressive range of options. Looking to pump some iron? Check out Manhattan Athletic Club or Planet Fitness, and keep your eyes peeled for Chelsea Piers Fitness, opening soon at 33 Bond! Swim laps, practice your half-court shot, or take advantage of their great range of classes at the Dodge YMCA, get your black belt at Brooklyn Martial Arts, or feel the burn at SoulCycle.
Take yoga classes, of which there are plenty in the neighborhood. Get flexible at Tangerine Hot Power Yoga, YogaWorks, or Yoga Pole Studio. Physio Logic provides physical therapy for any nagging issues (they also have yoga + pilates classes!). If you need more fun in your workouts, try a dance class at Dancewave, Brooklyn Ballet, or Mark Morris (look out for free classes and deals on our website). If you’re not in the mood to leave the house, Downtown Brooklyn-founded Dirty Yoga offers online classes that can be done in the comfort and warmth of your home.
When it does eventually defrost and your hibernation is over, take your fitness outside by going for a jog, walk, or ride in Commodore Barry, Fort Greene, Cadman Plaza or Brooklyn Bridge Parks. And if you need new sneakers or gear, stop by Super Runners Shop for a quick refresh. You’re welcome.
They say getting fit starts in the kitchen, so don’t overlook what you’re eating. Change up your cooking with new recipes and ingredients. Whole Foods 365, Trader Joe’s, Concord Market, and Khim’s Millenium, Downtown Natural Market, NYC Fresh Market and Target have all you need to whip up a wholesome feast.
Don’t forget your daily dose of fruit and veg! Get a liquid start with Brooklyn Juicer, Hawa King Smoothies, or Juice Press. Fill up with a vegan meal at Two Tablespoons, go for a salad at any of Downtown Brooklyn’s wonderful restaurants, or check out the options at the 40+ vendors at the DeKalb Market Hall.
Fix it up
Spruce up your stuff while you’re at it. Get your shoes repaired and shined, your clothes cleaned and tailored, and your devices fixed. Head to local shoe repair shop Downtown Shoe Repair, drop off your clothes at Bridge Cleaners & Tailors - a Downtown Brooklyn institution for 35 years - and, finally, hang out under a tree at Apple Downtown Brooklyn while your phone gets that upgraded battery.
Broaden your horizons
Keeping your body in prime condition is all well and good, but don’t forget to feed your mind, too! For the uninitiated, the Brooklyn Cultural District is packed with things to do and see, so get out and explore. Take your new and improved self to the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) or the New York Transit Museum, both experiences unique to Downtown Brooklyn. Pick up some digital media skills with classes at BRIC House, or learn to create beautiful blown glass art at UrbanGlass. Become a member of BAM or Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA), or see a movie, play, or musical performance. Support smaller institutions and enjoy more intimate performances at Roulette or ISSUE Project Room. See all of our cultural offerings on our website, and don’t forget to maybe plan some free time!
At the end of the day, we all need a break, a shopping trip, or a round of drinks (or three). Surprise, surprise – we’ve got you covered here, too. Take yourself shopping on Fulton Mall, see a movie (and have a meal) at the Alamo, or even pretend to be a tourist at a local hotel bar. Use your “cheat day” whenever possible to have a slice of cheesecake at Junior’s, or treat yourself to a long overdue spa visit at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge’s Bamford Haybarn Spa (and use our deal for a discount). Have fun whatever you do – you deserve it!
