THE FUTURE BEEN FEMALE: WOMEN IN HIP HOP, MULTIMEDIA INSTALLATION IN ALBEE SQUARE

On the heels of the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, DBP and BRIC are (literally) shining a light on and honoring the women of Hip Hop. Conceived by fashion icon April Walker, this public art installation will project historic images, lyrics and quotes by women artists, leaders and innovators over four Tuesday evenings, paired with interactive programming in Albee Square. Featuring photographs by Janette Beckman, Lisa Leone, and April Walker. Programming starts at 7:30pm; projections run from 8:30pm until 11:30pm.
Future Female Playlist
A 24-song playlist curated by April Walker with select classic tracks by women that rap. This playlist will be accessible via vinyl QR code decals in Albee Square, and here.
Funded by the NYC Department of Small Business Services Commercial District Lighting Grant.

Opening Reception w/DJ KAY KAY 47 and special guests

Join DBP, BRIC, and April Walker to toast the opening of THE FUTURE BEEN FEMALE, a multimedia celebration of women in Hip Hop. April Walker will share her vision for the piece, followed by a THE FUTURE BEEN FEMALE inspired set and dance party by DJ Kay Kay 47.
Dance FIT EXPERIENCE with Jamiyla Burton

Embrace your inner diva during this one hour dance class with Dance Fit CEO Jamiyla Burton. Following the class, participants will be invited to enjoy a happy hour at the Empanada Loca Beer Garden with Jamiyla and their classmates.

Summary: With THE FUTURE BEEN FEMALE projection in the background, legendary street artist Giannina Gutierrez will bring the prompt “how are you magic?” to life with a chalk drawing. The public will also be invited to join.
