Almost completely hidden by ongoing construction on all sides, The Rockwell Place is a vibrant pre- and post-show destination for film, music, and theater buffs attending events at the many venues of the Brooklyn Cultural District. Opened in December 2018 by former resident Joel Tompkins and Toby Cecchini, The Rockwell Place is more than just a bar. With its rock-inspired atmosphere and theatrical menu, it offers a unique experience. We spoke with general manager Alex Kveton to uncover more about this intriguing spot.

DBP: Can you share the story behind The Rockwell Place?

Alex: Joel Tompkins, the owner, has a talent for creating hidden gems that people discover by chance. When he lived on this block, he envisioned a bar that would offer a unique experience, distinct from others. The Rockwell Place is designed to be different, from its inventive drinks menu to its distinctive presentation.

DBP: Your menu looks like a photo book. Can you tell us about it and the little paragraphs at the end?

Alex: The menu is meant to be more than just a list of food and drinks. Those paragraphs add an unexpected touch, offering patrons something engaging to read and enjoy.

DBP: Why Downtown Brooklyn?

Alex: Joel previously lived in Downtown Brooklyn, and he wanted to open a bar here as a tribute to his time in the area. Additionally, the proximity to cultural institutions like BAM and BRIC was a significant factor. As a patron of the arts, Joel envisioned creating a hub for artists to gather before or after their performances. This neighborhood is vibrant with artistic energy, and we aim to reflect and engage with its cultural and historical essence.

That’s also why the bar features a gritty, industrial aesthetic that complements both the artistic culture and the area’s evolving character.

DBP: What makes The Rockwell Place special?

Alex: The bar’s connection to the arts is a major draw. We’ve hosted notable events, like a cast party for Cyrano de Bergerac, which featured James McAvoy. Our meticulous approach to crafting cocktails also sets us apart. We test and refine our drinks to ensure they’re the best versions on offer.

DBP: What’s your favorite drink on the menu?

Alex: My favorite is the Pat Geary, a Scotch-based variation of the Godfather cocktail. It’s named after a character from “The Godfather Part II,” blending Scotch and Vermouth in a unique way that reflects my sense of humor.

DBP: How about your food menu?

Alex: Our chef, Kevin Garrett who also worked at the Long Island Bar, created a standout burger with a sweet-savory flavor and a satisfying, yet light, feel. We’re working on expanding our menu with more sandwiches in the future.

DBP: What are your long-term goals for The Rockwell Place?

Alex: Overall, I hope to see more cocktail bars open in the neighborhood, creating a vibrant destination where people can enjoy a variety of cocktails within close proximity. This would help establish the area as a go-to spot for cocktail enthusiasts. I also want The Rockwell Place to become an even more prominent hub for the arts, serving as a place where people can gather to discuss shows and performances. It’s important to me that our bar continues to foster a sense of community and engagement with the arts. On a personal note, I hope my bartenders can earn a good living and make a positive impact on the community. We already have regulars who’ve celebrated significant moments, like first dates and wedding receptions, at our bar, and I’d love for us to continue being a meaningful part of people’s lives.

The Rockwell Place is a unique fixture in Downtown Brooklyn, blending a love for the arts with an exceptional bar experience. With its creative drinks, and commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural scene, it stands out as a destination where patrons can enjoy both the familiar and the unexpected. Whether you’re a local or here for a show, The Rockwell Place offers a memorable experience in a truly dynamic part of the city.
