As a vibrant heart of cultural diversity and entrepreneurial spirit, Downtown Brooklyn is a testament to the invaluable contributions of Black-owned businesses. Choosing to support Downtown Brooklyn’s Black-owned businesses – this month and beyond – fosters inclusivity, economic empowerment, and a brighter, more equitable future for all. Here is a selection of some of the neighborhood’s Black-owned businesses:

Beautiful Amore Skincare

Created by entrepreneur and skincare guru Amerrah Brown, Beautiful Amore Skincare specializes in all-natural, all-vegan skincare products. Amerrah founded the businesses in her search for healthier, cleaner skincare alternatives to treat her eczema. She stopped relying on the animal ingredients and harsh chemicals found in mainstream products and created her own line of soaps, body butters, and gels. Find these products at 445 Albee Square West inside City Point BKLYN.

Da Spot

Da Spot is a beloved boutique founded by entrepreneur Michelle Cadore that has established itself as a cultural fixture in Downtown Brooklyn. Da Spot provides over 25 independent Black-owned brands with the space, visibility, marketing, and community needed to thrive in a competitive market. Support one (or more) of the many brands housed in-store!

Afrikart

Locals know to go to Afrikart for their clothing needs. Run by founder Amadou Diack and his wife Fatou for the last three decades, the boutique sources clothing, fabric, and jewelry from Amadou’s home country of Senegal. These highly sought-after imports are in constant demand. Fatou also operates Fatou African Hair Braiding.

New York Beauty Suites

Beauty Suites provides flexible co-working spaces for a wide range of small beauty businesses, many of them Black-owned. Built by Johanne Brierre as a safe space for beauty technicians that were shut out of traditional salons during the height of the pandemic, NY Beauty Suites’ Downtown Brooklyn location houses sixteen businesses, including electrolysis hair removal services from Reveal BK, massages and body contouring by Amethyst Magnolia, and more. If you need your “hair done, nails done, everything did,” head to NY Beauty Suites.

Bed-Stuy Fish Fry

This long-standing outfit, which got its start in Bed-Stuy, has acquired legendary status among Brooklynites over the years. Famous for their fried fish and chicken, they branched out to Downtown Brooklyn on Willoughby Street before moving to their current location at 129 Livingston Street. If you’re looking for a taste of the south all the way up here in Brooklyn, give Bed-Stuy Fish Fry a try — they’re guaranteed to satisfy!

Likkle More Jerk

Owned by the locally renowned Chef Kemis, Likkle More Jerk provides an authentic Jamaican food experience and takes a modern twist on traditional Caribbean flavors. This fast-casual eatery has its origins in Montego Bay, and with 35 years of operation under its belt, is now available at DeKalb Market Hall. Try their oxtail stew, jerk chicken and waffles, or their curry chicken roti for a taste of Jamaica in Brooklyn.
